FULL-DEPTH RECLAMATION is a pavement rehabilitation technique in which the full
flexible pavement section and a predetermined portion of the underlying materials are uniformly crushed, pulverized or blended, resulting in a [homogenous] base course; further stabilization may be obtained through the use of available additives.”

Even the best laid pavement structures will in time breakdown, due to weather, traffic and time.
For years the repair of these pavements has been accomplished by various forms of surface treatments and renewal methods, where success often depends upon the condition of the underlying road base. Such procedures as mill & fill, cold planing, and hot- or cold-in-place recycling only rehabilitate the surface of the structure, and they typically require re-application on about a 12- to 15-year cycle. However, there is a superior technique of pavement rejuvenation –-
Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR).
|
Other structure rehab techniques grind away inches of the asphalt’s surface course, then replace it with new material. American Road Reclaimers' use of full-depth reclamation penetrates the entire flexible pavement section as well as a specified depth of the base material. While pulverizing and blending these materials together, a homogenous and fully recycled base course results. Optionally, during the FDR process, the road reclaimer has the ability to incorporate stabilizing agents to further improve the structural characteristics of the base course, greatly increasing its load carrying capacity. After full-depth reclamation, a structure can be rated for higher traffic counts and heavier loads. |
 |
The existing crack pattern that remains after other rehabilitation techniques, such as mill & fill, is completely eliminated by full-depth reclamation. Thus reflective cracking cannot occur in the repaired structure.
Future maintenance costs for the renewed tract are substantially reduced, and when considered over the life of the structure, FDR proves to be the most cost-effective road rejuvenation technique available. |

FDR’s wide array of benefits
Full-depth reclamation is a versatile process for rejuvenating city streets, township roads, county highways, industrial areas and commercial parking lots. These structures can all be thoroughly repaired and strengthened at 40% of the cost of full reconstruction. Likewise, FDR allows for road widening and complete correction of a structure’s geometry. Since the entire asphalt course is pulverized during the process, the potential for reflective cracking is completely eliminated. Another benefit, in areas where freeze-thaw cycles are a concern, the base materials homogenized by full-depth reclamation will ‘move’ together, greatly reducing the inevitability of future cracking. Since FDR’s process is more expedient than road reconstruction, traffic delays are also reduced. Contact American Road Reclaimers today to find out more about full-depth reclamation.

Most cost effective over the life of the structure
When considering the service life cost of a pavement structure, full-depth reclamation is the most economic rejuvenation process. Trucking expenses and labor costs are reduced since the recycled materials are left in place. Since an FDR-renewed structure has a 50% longer life than ones rejuvenated by other methods, the future costs of labor, oil & asphalt, and hauling are greatly minimized.

Cost-saving benefits of full-depth reclamation on pavement structures:
- FDR asphalt structure repairs can last twice as long as other methods of rehabilitation
- FDR eliminates the expense of hauling away the old material and bringing in new base aggregate
- FDR is 40% less costly than full reconstruction
|
Engineering benefits of full-depth reclamation on pavement structures:
- FDR increases road base strength and flexibility
- FDR allows for geometry correction – cross-slope and profile grade adjustments
- FDR is ideal for road widening projects
- FDR produces a renewed and superior road base which allows for economizing when engineering the new surface coarse

Who benefits from using full-depth reclamation to rejuvenate aging asphalt structures? Everyone.
Municipalities can best repair their city streets and parking lots – and counties their roads and highways – by using FDR. Industrial and commercial lots too, are most economically repaired by employing this process. Because full-depth reclamation results in a better and longer lasting repair – twice the life by some estimates – this technique saves the municipality costly, premature replacement. |
Full-depth reclamation is recycling at the highest level. Not only are the recycled materials utilized for the new structure base, they are ideally suited for the task, superior to most virgin aggregates available today. Plus, they won’t need to be hauled away, saving time, money and the environment due to fewer truck emissions released into the atmosphere.
